Dear Parent/Carer

You should have received the flyer advertising our Year 7 Summer School 2021 before half term. I am now pleased to be able to confirm further details of this and ask you to confirm your interest.

What is Summer School 2021?

Summer School 2021 is an opportunity for your daughter to come into Fairfield High School for Girls for a week before starting properly in September. There will be a blend of academic learning and fun enrichment activities to keep her busy and engaged throughout the week. It is a chance to get to know the school building, new friends and Fairfield staff including teachers, Teaching Assistants and pastoral staff. We are incredibly grateful that so many of our own staff can dedicate some of their summer break to welcoming our new pupils.

What will pupils be doing?

Each day, pupils will do one hour of Maths tuition and one hour of English tuition. This is delivered in small groups of up to 6 pupils by The Tutor Trust and focusses on pupils being ‘secondary ready’. We don’t want pupils to feel pressured after a challenging period for all so the sessions all have engaging themes to make it feel less like ‘just more school’. One theme, for example, focusses on Marcus Rashford’s recent drive to gain proper funding and support for free school meals and pupils will look at his new ‘pocket friendly recipes’ for a Maths activity focussing on ratio and proportion before completing a persuasive writing exercise in their English session.
Alongside this, we have an exciting programme of enrichment activities throughout the week. In addition to the 2 hours tuition, pupils will have 3 enrichment sessions each day, including:

When is it?

Every new pupil is invited to attend either:
Week 1 - Monday 16th August to Friday 20th August
Or
Week 2 - Monday 23rd August to Friday 27th August
Each day will run from 8:30am-3:00pm

Can we choose which week our daughter attends?

If your daughter can’t attend one of the weeks due to a holiday, for example, you can specify which week you would like your daughter to attend. If she is available for either though, this would really help us to even out numbers over the two weeks.

What if we can’t attend either week?

Please feel assured that your daughter will still receive the same friendly welcome and support when she starts with us in September.

What will my daughter need to wear or bring?

Pupils can wear their ‘own’ clothes (they do not need school uniform). They should bring a bottle of water to drink throughout the day and a pencil case with pens, pencils, etc. They may choose to bring a snack for break time. On the Monday and Tuesday, they will need suitable clothes for the dance workshop, dodgeball and yoga (such as leggings, a comfy top and trainers). They should not bring any valuable items. Mobile phones should be switched off and kept in pockets or bags throughout the day.

What are the arrangements for breaks/lunch times?

We are happy to be providing a free breakfast and lunch as part of our Summer School offer. Pupils can choose to bring their own food if they choose but our School Restaurant will be open for pupils to collect and eat a range of breakfast and lunch items with their new friends. There will be a 15 minute break in the morning and a 45 minute lunch break for pupils to eat and socialise. No food will be provided in the morning break but pupils can bring their own snack if they like.

How do we sign up?

If you would like your daughter to attend, please reply to this email (or email admin@fairfieldhighschool.co.uk) stating clearly the following information:

 Your daughter’s full name.
 An emergency contact number.
 If you need to attend one specific week, please state the week you would like (Week 1 or Week 2). It will really help us if as many people as possible can be flexible on this so we can balance numbers over the two weeks.
 If you can be flexible on which week your daughter attends but would like your daughter to attend the same week as a particular friend, please name the (one) friend and we will try to ensure they have the same week. We cannot guarantee she will be in the same group for all activities but will try where possible.
 Any specific dietary needs or medical requirements that we would need to be aware of, that you have not already informed us about by other means.

We really hope your daughter will be able to join us for a fun week!
Yours sincerely
Mrs V McCormick
Assistant Headteacher
